Are electronic crossovers required? |
|
| |
No. Lowther is a twin-cone full range drive unit with a bandwidth-frequency range which covers a wide spectrum of sound with great accuracy.
Enclosure designs will affect the final outcome and excellent results are achievable with......
BASS HORN ENCLOSURES,..... TRANSMISSION LINE,...... BASS REFLEX,.....
OPEN BAFFLE ......AND OTHER LABYRINTHINE DESIGNS.

How many Lowther drivers are required per enclosure? |
|
| |
Generally speaking, one driver per enclosure is perfectly adequate but there are designs utilizing two drivers, connected in parallel for greater acoustic output.

What are the benefits of single speaker full range drive units? |
|
| |
Paul Voigt, the inventor, noted that his "full range" twin- cone loudspeaker had "life".
A "single source" loudspeaker, positioned for stereo, presents an extraordinarily wide and detailed image, often with pin-point accuracy; singers are in front of you and musicians and instruments remain in their positions when originally recorded !

Lowther Drive Units produce very realistic sounds.... How is this accomplished? |
|
| |
There are several explanations. The twin cones, comprising a main cone for bass and lower mid-range and an inner cone (whizzer) for the mid and upper mid-range and high frequencies with a very special speech coil. These cones (membranes) are extremely light weight and move with extraordinary speed.
Complete suspensions comprising Lowther's unique treated parchment cones, speech coils, spiders and foam surrounds total a mere 11 grams in all. Movement of the cones is controlled in a magnetic gap of great power.
The speed of the Lowther cone is legendary and the result is accuracy. The separation of instruments, voice and other sounds is a usually a revelation to the listener. Bass horn enclosures produce astonishing realism and breathtakingly beautiful sound.

Do I need a high powered amplifier to drive a Lowther loudspeaker? |
|
| |
No, you do not. Lowther Drive Units are incredibly efficient and a low power tube (or valve) amplifier can drive them easily. Higher powered amplifiers are fine also, however the volume control will always be turned down to a low volume setting.

The mid-range reproduction of Lowther is reputed to be the best in the world. Is this true and why? |
|
| |
When the drive unit is "run in" and the diaphragms and suspensions "soften" the famous Lowther mid-range fully reveals itself in this most difficult region of the bandwidth. Common speaker systems utilize two, three or more different drivers with electronic crossovers to cover the sound spectrum, with the unavoidable "overlaps" at the crossover frequencies selected by the designer.
Unfortunately this is often at the expense of good mid-range and it has been claimed that crossover circuits degrade overall reproduction of sound particularly in the mid-range. Multi- speakers in an enclosure can inter-react with each other at different volume levels affecting the "balance" of the sound and designers pay particular attention to this to achieve an acceptable sound.
The full range drive unit requires no crossover circuitry and is connected directly to the amplifier with very satisfying resulting sound quality.

What constitutes "good" sound"? |
|
| |
Sound reproduction is, and always will be, highly individual. If the loudspeaker had been perfected, then all loudspeakers would sound the same. The music lover is usually content to play a favourite recording and sit back and simply enjoy the music at his/her command. The audiophile delights in the reproduction of sound via his/her chosen equipment. Often the two overlap and Lowther can satisfy both with breathtakingly beautiful reproduction of the human voice as well as the instruments of the orchestra or band........... "Towards perfection", has been a motto of Lowther since the early days of sound reproduction and, through Lowther loudspeakers, we do have the ability to call up the great artists of today and yesterday to perform again and again at our command.
Listeners to A.B.C. Classic Radio, and the wonderfully diverse range of music it provides, will appreciate the quality of sound made possible by Lowther. Collectors of vinyl discs will hear sounds from disc possibly never previously heard and, with a single source speaker, surface noise is minimal. Good vinyl recordings can be amazing when reproduced with detail not previously audible. Your record collection will enjoy a new lease on life!
