lowther sound reproduction philosophy.

In a nutshell, the full-range Lowther philosophy is that the audio spectrum should be covered by a single driver, believing that the incorporation of multiple drivers and the required crossover filter rob the music of its true natural presentation and introduce distortion and phase shift that is unavoidable. The difficulties of developing a full range single driver are numerous yet its strengths are just too good to overlook. Theoretically, a perfect speaker system would be a single driver with the ability to reach all the frequencies necessary to reproduce music. This is the goal designers have been longing for since Paul Voigt first developed his single driver full range approach. Despite the loss of some of the lowest and highest frequencies, the gains produced by Lowther's approach in coherency and naturalness are well worth it. Especially if your musical tastes run towards classical or acoustic instrument. For reproducing the human voice there may never be a design surpassing the coherency presented by Lowther designs. Nearly all conventional multi-driver speaker systems put a crossover in the mid-range to split thesignal to the bass driver and tweeter. Music is made up of approximately 70% mid-range and this is the most critical hearing region, where our ears are most sensitive. If the mid-range is off then it really doesn't matter what the other ends of the frequency range sound like, our brains are convinced what we are hearing is not the real thing. There is no way around it, crossovers introduce phase and balance problems that cause deterioration in detail, transparency and imaging. And the design variations of each driver in a multi-driver system, with different time-constants and sonic characteristics, further blur the sonic picture being presented.

 DX Series

The DX Series,(2-3 & 4) is virtually the same as EX but without the acoustic chamber or phase equalizer. (DX4 only has the equalizer fitted as standard).

DX is suitable for horn, transmission line, bass reflex, pipe and baffle etc. Sound quality will vary depending on the chosen enclosure other than horn but all should provide a spacious sound with outstanding mid-range, a feature of Lowther Drive Units.

  EX Series

The EX Series,(2-3 & 4) using Neodymium (Rare Earth) magnets are lighter and with high flux density.

EX is recommended for bass horn application. (stronger "mid-upper" and cleaner bass).

C Series

"C" Series, using Feroba 2 ( Ceramic) high flux magnets are the least expensive in the Lowther range and have the lightweight cones and suspensions necessary to produce good quality sound. The cones and speech coils do differ from "A" and the EX & DX Series. Overall a great Lowther Drive Unit for the beginner or other at moderate cost.

A Series

"A" Series, using the heavy and powerful Alnico magnets (aluminium-nickel-copper-iron and cobalt) is a favourite of long-time users of Lowther drivers and produces the "classic" Lowther sound so familiar over the years and used in the great enclosures of yesteryear.... TP1... Audiovector...Acousta etc.

"A" Series drive units.. PM6A..PM7A have the same diaphragm assemblies as EX & DX drivers.................(PM2A..PM4A..PM5A have longer speech coils) and all are available with Hi-Ferric aluminium or silver speech coils.

Lowther do supply the Phase Equalizer as an alternative to the standard "bullet" stabilizer at extra cost if requested. Some users still prefer the original "bullet" stabilizer but opinion is divided. Technical details of the newer Phase Equalizer can be perused on the Lowther Website.
